A Soma cube for a baby

Introduction

I constructed a Soma cube, for my baby son, out of children's wooden bricks. He can't put it together yet (and probably won't bother learning!), but loves the shapes, and takes great delight in pulling the formed cube apart.

Soma cubes

There's a vast number of websites out there on the subject of Soma cubes. Here's a start:

Construction

  • The cubes were bought from Hamleys (in London), but (obviously) any cubes will do. They cost about £18, but are nicely painted, and of fairly high tolerance.
  • To stick them together, I've tried both regular wood glue, and double-sided sticky tape.
Wood glue seems the best. In this case, though, make sure that you sand the faces you're gluing together. A sander attachment for a drill makes this about 100 times easier.
  • I invested in a couple of clamps. G-clamps are ok, but quick-grip ones are much better.

Purchase

A local manufacturer can assemble these Soma cubes at a total cost of £30 (+postage).
If you would like one, and don't want to build it yourself, please email me an order, and I'll put you in touch.
